Dear Carers,

Mid-winter brings positive and long awaited news for carers. We were delighted to receive a commitment for funding under the ACT Carers Strategy from the ACT Government early this month. The four-year funding package will advance the objectives of the Strategy, such as better community recognition and support for carers.  I look forward to working with carers, government and sectors of the community to make sure this ACT Carers Strategy funding has lasting and meaningful positive impacts.

In other great news for carers, we welcome a second coach to the Carers ACT team this month. This means we will soon have increased capacity to offer this service to carers.   Coaching is distinct from counselling and other mental health supports as it offers carers an avenue to explore their own goals and self-directed strategies for balancing caring and other aspects of life.  Carers often have to set aside our own needs because the needs of another must take priority, but coaching can be a valuable process for re-balancing your priorities in all aspects of your life and maintaining your caring role in a sustainable and healthy way. If you are interested in finding out more about carer coaching, please reach out to your care planner or the carer gateway on 1800 422 737.

A few interesting publications are out this month that I’d like to highlight;

  • Our own Mental Health Carers Voice team have released the 2022 ACT Mental Health Carers Survey Report which can be found here: 2022-MHCV-Survey-Report.pdfOur gratitude to all carers who participated in the survey.
  • Our colleagues at Advocacy for Inclusion publish a quarterly online magazine, The Canberra Disability Review, and the latest Winter Edition has just come out. The focus of this issue is inclusion in emergency and disaster planning and management. It’s a timely topic given our recent experiences of fire, flood, and the ongoing pandemic.   The Winter 2022 Edition can be found at: www.advocacyforinclusion.org/cdr/

A final highlight of this newsletter is our continuing social activities. Adjusting to the new normal of life with COVID and balancing ever-changing risk with the need to combat social isolation continues to present challenges, but it is wonderful to see carers and care recipients gathering on a more regular basis.   Please read on to hear about our NAIDOC celebration with young carers, some recent retreat highlights and yarns at the cottages.

Stay warm and safe carers,

Lisa Kelly
CEO

YOUNG CARERS GET UP! STAND UP! & SHOW UP!

A group of young carers celebrated NAIDOC Week with Carers ACT recently in a jam-packed day including a cultural workshop with Wiradjuri Echoes, a game with Oztag ACT, and a painting workshop with local talent Darren Rix. It was great to see this group of young carers make connections with each other, learn new things, and have fun! This group of young carers were enthusiastic about celebrating the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples. This included learning about those who have driven change over generations, fitting with the 2022 NAIDOC Week theme of ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’

Carers ACT organises regular events and social groups for young carers. Young carer events offer respite and a chance to connect with others in similar circumstances. WINTER RETREATS A WELCOME TREAT

On the 28th – 30th June a wonderful respite retreat was held at the Sebel at Kiama.  Retreats provide the opportunity for carers to relax, recharge and learn helpful information to assist with their caring role.  Some highlights of this retreat for carers were the massage and art therapy.  Carers really appreciate the day program provided for the family member they care for and the opportunity to unwind.  The dinners at night provide a place to make new connections, to share valuable stories as well as have some fun.  Carers ACT run respite retreats in the ACT and in the Illawarra for carers aged over 65.  If you would like more information you can email group.programs@carersact.org.au or call (02) 6296 9982.

COTTAGES ON SHOW AND NAIDOC YARNS

On the 17th of June staff and clients of Deakin Cottage and Naraganawali dusted off the glad rags and spent the day in front of the camera raising awareness about the many services that the Cottages provide.

Kate and her crew from Coordinate spent the time interviewing and chatting with the clients that attended that day.  They captured many special moments and interaction between staff and clients that typify the family we are.

Prior to this Kate and her cameraman interviewed several carers who sang the praises of the Cottage staff and second to none they all agreed that the benefits of respite had a positive and beneficial impact on their lives.

We celebrated NAIDOC week in the true Cottage way, starting off the week dot painting on gum leaves and followed by sharing Aboriginal dreamtime stories.  By the middle of the week, we were really testing our craft skills by making miniature rain sticks that let to impromptu dance session.   One of our staff members bought in her father’s precious didgeridoo and shared the story of it’s origins and meaning to her family.

CARER COACHING

In 2021 Carers ACT in partnership with the Carer Gateway launched our Carer Coaching program. Carer Coaching offers you the opportunity to work one on one with a trained coach to reflect on your experiences and needs, identify personal goals, and take the necessary steps to move towards those goals. In conversation with your coach, you can reflect on how things are going for you and whether there are areas in your life where you might like to make some changes. Together, you can explore possible steps that move you in the direction of your goal. It is a great way to help you find the balance between your needs as a carer and your responsibilities.

If you would like to a work with a Carer Coach, please contact us on 1800 422 737, email carer.support@carersact.org.au or speak directly with your Carers ACT care planner.

"FILLING THE CUP BACK UP" REPORT RELEASED

MHCV is pleased to announce that we have released the 2022 ACT Mental Health Carers Survey Report – “ Filling the cup back up”.  Thank you to all the carers who took the time to respond to our survey. The survey results have indicated that access and inclusion in the mental health system continues to be a major concern for carers, with result in 2021 showing a decline in carer satisfaction and sentiment against 2020.  This issue is well on our radar as an advocacy team, and these findings will be guiding our work across 2022-2023.
