MHCV Team Update

Hi valued carers,

Welcome to the new financial year! We're currently celebrating the fantastic news that Carers ACT will be receiving a funding boost of $825,000, aiding the implementation of the ACT Carers Strategy over the next 4 years. This is a welcome announcement for all of us and we look forward to working together to advance the objective of the strategy.  As icing on the cake, the MHCV contract has also been extended for five more years, giving us more wiggle room to strategise for the long term.

The team has been working hard on all the contract reporting that the end of the financial year requires. This has been a joyful process, as we look back over our last 12 months and see how much we have achieved. MHCV will continue to strive for the best for mental health carers in the upcoming year (and beyond).

As for now, here are some things to keep your eye out for:

  • The Dhulwa Inquiry is now open for you to contribute your issues and concerns. Please send your feedback to mhcarers@carersact.org.au by 12th August. Find out more details below.
  •  The 2022 National Carers Survey closes the end of this month! We would like to appeal to ACT carers to fill out the survey, as this will increase our voice at a national level. The data we receive from this survey will also be useful for service delivery within the ACT.
  • We've recently published our 2022 Mental Health Carers Survey Report. MHCV would like to express our gratitude to everyone who responded to our survey. We are currently prioritising the use of your feedback to shape our workplan. Read more about the findings below.

As always, a friendly reminder that your voice is vital to the work we do and if you have anything you wish to share please feel free to contact us via email mhcarers@carersact.org.au.

All the best,

Catherine Joseph and Catherine Vonarx,

The Mental Health Carers Voice Team

Funding Boost for ACT Carers Strategy

On Friday the 22nd of July it was announced that the 2022-2023 ACT budget will include a significant investment in carer wellbeing and visibility, with a funding package worth $825,000 allocated to Carers ACT for use over 4 years.

The funding will continue to progress the outcomes and objectives of the ACT Carers Strategy, recognising the valuable contribution that carers make to the territory.

Carers ACT CEO Lisa Kelly noted that "funding the ACT Carers Strategy is an excellent step in sharing the responsibility of care and we are deeply grateful to the carers, Ministers, government, service providers and members of the Community Services Directorate who started this journey in 2016 and who continue to invest in a Canberra that cares for Carers.”

Recovery Oriented Language Guide Updated

The Mental Health Coordinating Council has released an updated version of the Recovery Oriented Language Guide for use in mental health services to promote respectful and inclusive language. The popular guide, which is available for free download, contains lists of destigmatising language and practical Dos and Don'ts to assist in reframing language positively. The most recent edition has new chapters on using language that is inclusive of diversity, discussing suicide, and working with young people.

We encourage everyone working in the sector to download a copy, distribute it among colleagues, or request printed copies.

The Guide can be found here.

Thirrili - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention, Intervention, Postvention and Aftercare Service coming to Canberra

Thirrili Limited, a leading Aboriginal community-controlled organisation service provider, will implement a new initiative to assist in reducing suicide and the repercussions of suicide within the ACT's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community. The local Way Back Support Service at Woden Community Service will collaborate with the program's delivery team.

To guarantee that this service offers culturally appropriate help, Thirrili was hired through a community-led commissioning process. The service is essential for both suicide prevention and providing aid to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in the ACT who have been affected by suicide. To ensure that the programme meets their needs, supports families, and fosters strength and resilience, Thirrili will collaborate closely with the ACT's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Before launching the service, Thirrili will first prioritise community engagement and obtaining local cultural insight into the mental health issues of the ACT's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

Mental Health Carers Survey Report June 2022 - 'Filling the Cup Back Up'

MHCV is pleased to announce that the ACT Mental Health Carers Survey Report ('Filling the Cup Back Up') has now been released. Several themes arose from the results, including; concerns for safety in the home, quantity and quality of mental health services, and the need for consistent respect, inclusion, and communication from services.

The survey results indicate that there has been some improvement in the way that carers have accessed and felt respected by services within the sector. Nonetheless, there is a need to work collaboratively to address the various gaps made obvious by your valuable feedback.

The full report is now available to read on the MHCV website.

Review of Academic Literature on School-based Mental Health Programs for 8-12 year olds - Office of Mental Health and Wellbeing

Following the Review of Children and Young People in the ACT, the Office of Mental Health and Wellbeing has made a commitment to undertake an analysis of the mental health programs offered to 8-12 year olds. Part of this commitment includes gaining an understanding what programs are available, as well as the available literature on school based mental health programs.

The literature review for this project has been released by the Office and can be read here.

Social Participation - Mental Health Australia

Mental Health Australia has recently published a position statement on Social Participation and Mental Health, which outlines actions that governments and communities should take together to improve social participation.

Social participation is about engaging with other people – it’s related to personal feelings of connectedness, and societal inclusion – and is important for everyone’s mental health and wellbeing, as well as supporting recovery for people with experience of mental ill-health.
